Morocco stresses importance of coherent action to overcome the economic crisis

Geneva - Morocco's Foreign Trade Minister, Abdellatif Maâzouz, stressed the importance of strengthening the coherence of different measures and instruments proposed by various international and regional organizations to overcome the economic crisis.

Speaking on Monday at a meeting of the G110, held on the sidelines of the World Trade Organization's (WTO) 7th ministerial conference (Geneva November 30-December 2), Maâzouz said that Morocco (Maroc) is also convinced that trade is an important vehicle for getting out of the crisis.

The minister called for an effective opening "mutually beneficial for our economies," and for denouncing all the temptations of protectionism, while urging the consolidation of the WTO programme on trade capacity building for southern countries.

Due to the impact of food, energy, financial and economic crises during the past three years, some of our countries are threatened by macroeconomic and social imbalances, Maâzouz added.

As a member of the African Group, he went on, Morocco supports the statement made by the Minister of Gabon and of Egypt as coordinator of the group, which reiterated the kingdom’s commitment to the declaration of the Conference that was held by the African Group last November.

Morocco, Mexico trade exchanges up 15% in 2008

Mexico - Morocco was the fifth trading partner of Mexico in Africa, with a trade volume of 207.5 million dollars in 2008, i.e. an increase of 15.3% compared with 2007, Mexican Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa said.

Mexico "highly appreciates its bilateral relations with Morocco over the last 46 years," Espinosa, who starts a visit to Morocco (Maroc) on Tuesday, told MAP.

She highlighted the priority areas for development of bilateral cooperation, notably water resources, innovation in agriculture and the fight against desertification.

Referring to the 2005 and 2006 meetings of Moroccan-Mexican joint commission, Espinosa said these meetings are an ideal forum to exchange experiences to further enhance cultural, educational and diplomatic cooperation.

Despite the “excellent results of our economic cooperation”, Mexico considers that the potential of exchanges could be developed through business missions and participation of Moroccan and Mexican companies in trade fairs, held in both countries.

As for the Sahara issue, Espinosa said that Mexico supports “the efforts undertaken by the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General, Christopher Ross, to reach a lasting solution” to this conflict.

Mexico, she went on to say, has voiced “continuous support” to a “just, lasting and mutually acceptable” solution to the Sahara issue within the framework of the UN.

The minister reiterated that her country supported the extension of the mandate of the UN Mission in the Sahara (MINURSO) as “an important contributor to the UN efforts to reach a final solution” to the 34-year conflict.

Morocco, ITC sign cooperation agreement in export promotion

Geneva - Morocco and the International Trade Center (ITC) signed, on Tuesday in Geneva, a cooperation agreement to implement the "Enhancing Arab Capacity for Trade" (EnACT) Programme in Morocco, Maroc.

ENACT is a regional programme of technical assistance funded by the Canadian International Development Agency and implemented by ITC, a joint agency of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the United Nations.

Besides Morocco, ENACT benefits Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria. It aims to strengthen the competitiveness of Moroccan products internationally and contribute to the improvement of export strategies. The $ 8.4 million programme will allocate $ 1.6 million to Morocco.

The International Trade Center aims to assist developing countries and transition economies to achieve sustainable human development through exports.

Tourist arrivals in Morocco up 6% to October

Rabat - Tourist arrivals in Morocco have risen, in the year to October, by 6% compared to the year before to reach over 7 million tourists, Tourism Ministry said .

The French topped the list with 2.6 million, followed by the Spanish (1.5 million), the Belgians (398,000), the Germans (358,000) and the British (297,000).

Though the rise in tourist arrivals, overnight stays in Morocco's, maroc, classified hotels decreased by 2% to 13.9 million between January-October 2009. This slight fall is due to the poor performances of the different tourist destination.

Morocco to produce 40% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020, official says

Rabat - Morocco will produce 40 pc of its energy from renewable sources by the year 2020, said on Thursday, Abdelkebir zahoud, Water and Environment Secretary of State, Maroc.

Speaking to the press before the government's cabinet meeting, Zahoud said Morocco has worked out plans and programs in renewable energies tailored to climate change in a bid to contribute to reducing global warming.

To face up the global climate challenges, Morocco has set up a new strategy for the development of hydraulic resources which will enable the Kingdom to ensure food security, said Zahoud, recalling the various ambitious programs devised by the Kingdom to protect forests, preserve halieutic resources and produce clean energy through the promotion of solar and wind power.

A large-scale solar energy project, worth about 9 billion dollars, was unveiled lately at a meeting held under the chairmanship of HM King Mohammed VI.

This national, ambitious and realistic project seeks to achieve a 2,000-megawatt capacity by 2020.This targeted production capacity accounts for 38% of the electric power at the end of 2008 and 14% by 2020.

EU grants Morocco $ 100 mln to promote exports, contribute to Tramway project

Rabat - The European Union granted, on Friday, Morocco a donation of 771 million dirhams (100 million dollars) to promote investments and exports, and contribute to the financing of the Rabat-Salé tramway project.

Worth 680 million dirhams, the first agreement which provides for supporting investments and exports in Morocco was signed by Economy Minister, Salaheddine Mezouar and Head of the Delegation of the European Commission in Rabat, Maroc, Eneko Landaburu.

Under the second agreement (totaling 91 million dirhams), the "Neighborhood Investment Facility" is to contribute to the financing of the Rabat-Salé tramway project. It was signed by Mezouar and general manager of the Bouregreg Valley Development Agency, Essakl Lemghari.

Morocco's phosphoric acid exports to India hit 'historic record'

Hyderabad (India) The state-owned Office Cherifien des Phosphates (OCP) exported between January and November 2009 over one million tons of phosphoric acid towards India.

This volume is "a historic record" since it accounts for over half of India's imports of the substance , an OCP source said at the Ferteliser association of India (FAI)'s annual meeting held 3-5 December in Hyderabad (south of India), with the participation of 1,200 economic representatives from India and abroad.

Indian enterprise "Paradeep Phosphat-LTD", a subsidiary of OCP group, won the prize of the best phosphoric acid producer at the event themed "the fertilizer sector's policy for a sustainable agriculture.

The participation of OCP in the event is part the promotion of privileged relations with India, a strategic partner in this field, OCP said.
